NDF – Since We Last Met (Ricardo Villalobos Remixes) [DFA2265]

NDF - Since We Last Met (Ricardo Villalobos Remixes)

Delicious techno star-bomb from the mysteriously titled NDF, seriously notable for a Villalobos re-edit and the fact that it sounds more akin to a Kompkat release than a DFA twelve. Whatever, both sides are coated in the sumptuous soft synth elegance; all arcing synth clusters, clicking percussion motifs and multitracked, whispered vocal lines.

The two super talents from Bacau, Romania showcase their Reverstrip EP with maximum effect, bringing us two original tracks and two very special remixes. ‘Reverbuit’ is a classic style old school house burner and ‘Simple Strip’ is a devasating percussive loop tool which if used correctly will destroy dancefloors the world over. The mysterious Bim Bim steps up to take on remix duty for ‘Reverbuit’ whilst one of the most respected and exciting DJ and producer in the world, Rhadoo, gives us a multi layered, tick tock wonky tradmark style bomb for ‘Simple Strip’. VA – Cocoon Compilation J [CORLP023]

VA - Cocoon Compilation J

When the then still young Frankfurt label Cocoon Recordings discovered the long-playing format with its Compilation A in Summer 2000, probably nobody could have, even approximately, foreseen the success story of this series. For ten years now, the cocoon-style declination of the alphabet is a guarantor for high-class and exclusively produced floor burners by the international Techno and House elite, and, beyond that, a reliable indicator for the stylistic bandwidth of contemporary electronic dance music. And even with the previous editions A to I having set the bar damn’ high, the J edition starts with a true musical sensation, as the opener “Cocoon Dark Dub” comes from nobody less than Moritz von Oswald. “Those who – even just rudimentary – have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald’s timeless classics like “Domina”, “M-4″ or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, “Cocoon Dark Dub” is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label.” (Sven Väth) So, initially, it’s the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. Mathias Kaden’s intuition for the crowd and location is legendary, his music is both distinctly ambitious and refreshing, and so is his contribution “Rave Strikes Back”. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance (“Bolder”), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine (“Keep On”). With “SBooty”, the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements. Improvised horn licks are whirring through a flickering resonating body while the bass kick is filling up the tropic ambient air. However, the invariably Cocoon policy to always support interesting newcomers becomes visible in the contribution of Basti Grub from the Rhine Neckar area, whose label Höhenregler is well-known for several musical insider tips in the past. “Sick” is ascending into your brain immediately with its melodic high-frequency hook line and mysterious vocals, matching perfectly to the melancholic playfulness of the tracks by Guy Gerber. Deep Dish member Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire and the Parisian Popof are the ones to prove impressively that you virtually can’t go wrong with stringent Hypno Techno and a diaphragm-shaking bass drum. Besides the above-mentioned, the J compilation holds such well-known producers like Loco Dice, Extrawelt, Reboot and last not least long-time Cocoon companion Ricardo Villalobos, whose 12-minutes-long dance on the echo-filled “Humusweg” once again draws the bow to the Basic Channel sound from another side, and leaves much room for own visions in between the pulsing metronome of the bass line. In any case, the history of electronic dance music has not been outtold so far.

Unknown Artist – Early House EP 5 [EARLY5]

Unknown Artist - Early House EP 5

Popular in France from the old house Rikonsutorakuto modernized instruments [Early House] series, and now Lil Louis is the fifth released in 1989 masterpiece “I Called U” version of the most popular ‘The Story Continues’ fodder to use! Easy to use because it feels like a ride to the track now classic funky house featuring sexy sax, and I suggest a great finish and not just fans in general love towards minimal house! Already been played by Ricardo Villalobos & Luciano !

Mike Shannon feat Fadila – Under The Radar [CYN040]

Mike Shannon feat Fadila - Under The Radar

10.2 years of flying under the radar September 23rd 1999 was a monumental day for the Canadian electronic community… or at least should have been This was the day that the first Cynosure Recordings release, entitled “the focal point”, was launched out into the world. Comprising a combination of deep minimal house and jackin techno the record was steadfastly ignored and overlooked by the international techno community at large, setting a precedent and laying a course that the label has embraced as it’s burden for just over 10 years now. Though Cynosure has provided a steady stream of fodder for the discerning DJ every few months since, music journalists the world over have by and large refused to mention it. No label profiles, no formal mention of collective works, and sadly no one hit wonders have graced the catalog. Conversely, the elite taste makers which make up the crème de la crème of the underground DJ community have continually charted and dropped track after track the world over . A strange phenomenon certain to boggle the mind of cultural theorists for years to come. Admittedly the labels A&R choices have always gone against the grain of the populous dance music norm. Though he could be a accused of many things, “band wagon jumper” is certainly not a tag which label head Mike Shannon could wear comfortably or honestly. A devastatingly talented DJ in his own right, he has chosen to be an example both with his sets and the label of the most uncompromising possibilities that dance music has to offer. Never following, always leading, the rarest of a modus operandi. As such it seems all too fitting after a decade of living in the shadows that Shannon, the master of the piss take and techno’s Prince of cats, should choose to deliver the label anthem “Under the Radar”. Featuring vocals by up and coming Berlin based singer Fadila, and remixes from Ricardo Villalobos, Deadbeat, Rozzo of Mountain People, Massi DL, and Wasted Chicago Youth (aka Justin Long and Masi), this celebratory anniversary release is one certain to out grow it’s cheeky title. File under crucial… point 2.

Ricardo Villalobos And Fumiya Tanaka – Fumiyandric [SND001]

Ricardo Villalobos And Fumiya Tanaka - Fumiyandric

Brilliant minimal experimentalism from two highly trusted leaders of the game appearing on Fumiya Tanaka’s Sundance imprint. While the genre may have taken some stick in recent years, it’s stuff like this that keeps it relevant in our books, as Ricardo Villalobos is a singluarly minded auteur whose skill lies in shaping individual elements with an innately funky quality that simply can’t be found elsewhere. ‘Fumiyaandric 1′ is primed for the deepest moments of the dance with Latin influenced cowbell patterns and fretting bassline warps finding their rhythm while a sublime drone envelops the whole thing in it’s own fragile ecosystem. ‘Fumiyandric 2′ is just as stripped, but this time fills the space with Fumiya’s dissected Japanese vocals slithering over the groove while an undercurrent of supple bass supports eerie samples and a hypnotic guitar riff gives something to latch on to. Villalobos releases have been thin on the ground this year but that’s no problem when he drops records of this quality. Ace.
